Women's Health Q & A

What is a well-woman exam?

A well-woman exam is the foundation of your gynecology care and an important part of your overall health and wellness. These visits provide an opportunity to get the screenings you need at various points in your life to reach and maintain optimal health.

Your annual exam is also your chance to speak with Dr. Ennis about any changes you’ve experienced since your last visit. She can help you understand what to expect as you move through the phases of life, bringing you peace of mind.

Well-woman exams are primarily a preventive form of health care. However, if an issue is identified during your exam, Dr. Ennis explains your treatment options in detail, giving you everything you need to make an informed decision about your health.

What happens during a well-woman exam?

First, you discuss your health and any concerns you have with Dr. Ennis. If this is your initial visit, she asks you about your personal and family health history, including any medications or supplements you’re taking.

Next Dr. Ennis performs a pelvic exam. You recline on the exam table or chair. Dr. Ennis checks your vagina and cervix for tissue abnormalities and other signs of disease. A pelvic exam is not normally a painful process, but if you’re experiencing pelvic symptoms and the exam is uncomfortable, let Dr. Ennis know.

A Pap smear may follow. This simple screening tool is the best way to detect cervical cancer in the earliest stages when treatment is most effective. During your pelvic exam, Dr. Ennis uses a medical tool to collect cells from your cervix, which are then sent to a lab and examined for signs of cancer. You receive your results within a couple of weeks of your exam.
